Using GIS to analyze transit routes and land use

Route 1 & 2

Route 3, 4 and 5

Summary:
In this project, I used GIS (Graphic Information System) to analyze five proposed routes of Santa Ana fixed guideway projects. The map above shows a summary of land use designation within 5-min walking distance (1,000 feet) to route one and two. This analysis showed that route 2 covers larger residential densities, commercial and job-generation land areas; thus it is a more ideal option in terms of the scope of impact to the local neighborhood.

Steps for the project:
1.) Collect land use designation shape file and road files from Census website. Collect the city of Santa Ana's latest zoning file and density regulations from the General Plan. (References are listed below)
2.) Select the project area and export data
3.) Update land use file according to the city's latest zoning regulation by editing attribute table
4.) Select the roads that route 1 and 2 go through and edit the lines to match the routes' paths
5.) Create 1,000 feet buffer around the two routes
6.) Clip land use layer by the buffer shape files
7.) Derive the land use designations within the buffer areas
